The Five People You Meet in Heaven

This book was ok. The story was definitely moving and I certainly cried. I wouldn't say it was one of my favourite books, but, at less than 200 pages, I will probably read it again.

I think what I disliked about this book was that it seemed to preach and give lessons about how you should live your life. I don't like novels that have a "message", I prefer that they just have a story. I think that is the my problem with a lot of modern novels, they want to tell me how to be a better person, or how to live my life. If I wanted a book to tell me how to live my life, I would read a self-help book. Another problem that I had with this book is that I don't really believe in heaven. I think that this is the life you have and you should be a good person because it is the only life you get and you want to make the most of it, not because you want to be rewarded in some eternal paradise. Also, eternal paradise sounds hella boring.

The book did a good job of keeping my attention, and since it was so short, I read it all in one go. I wasn't wild about the structure, the "Today is Eddie's birthday" thing was confusing at the beginning and got old SO fast. There were also some parts with unclear pronouns and I hate that, you should always be able to tell who is doing or saying what.

Anyway, if you are a believer in heaven, or have a short attention span, or would like to cry while reading a book, I would recommend this one, but I wasn't a huge fan. I remember liking Tuesdays With Morrie more when I read it, but that was four years ago.

201.4

Well, it's not MORE than last week.

It was this morning though. 202.2. I suck pretty hard. I didn't want to post this morning because I was so upset about it. And today I had a migraine like you wouldn't believe, so I stayed home from work and slept most of the day. I guess sleeping all day helps you lose weight, because here I am, 7 hours of sleep and 1 shit later: 201.4.

I am not doing well at my sleep little changes, I finished The Five People You Meet in Heaven yesterday and then found My Sister's Keeper in the laundry room so I read that yesterday too and didn't get to sleep until 3. Not on the list though, so let's just say I cried, but I didn't think it was a fantastic book. I cry at Tim Horton's commercials for children's hockey though, so take that with a grain of salt. I probably won't read it again. I forgot to take my Pill yesterday and I haven't showered for a couple of days because I slept in on Tuesday and was nearly late for work and I was just too lazy to do it today. I made supper the last couple of nights (chicken caesar salad and meatloaf and pasta) but today I made my husband bring home DQ because they have been advertising Blizzards like crazy and I am a sucker for advertising. Things are going great on the dishes front, the only dirty dish in our house right now is a cup full of milk that I am drinking. The financial stuff is not going super hot, I let my husband take advances on next week's entertainment cash for Blizzards and I haven't opened the TFSA and RRSP yet. Pay day isn't until next week though, so it's not URGENT.

Anyway, that is my life so far. I am terrible at sleeping when I am supposed to and I think my migraines are caused by my glasses. Super.

Little Change 7

This week's little change is a financial little change. I got a couple of raises at the end of last month (just annual performance and collective agreement things) and it is driving me crazy that, although we are out of debt, we are making no progress in saving money to buy a house. I really want to live in a house. I want a yard. And to not be woken up by an incessantly barking dog on Sunday mornings. Seriously people, if you put your dog out on the balcony because it is barking too much, do not be surprised if one of your neighbours shoots it. (I would never shoot a dog, but after 45 minutes of barking, I was pretty fucking close.)

Also, we are spending too much money on stupid things and it is annoying me. We make a very good wage and we are living from paycheck to paycheck. It is ridiculous. With that in mind, little change 7 is:

I will open a RRSP and TFSA and make automatic deductions to these accounts at every paycheck.

Also, we will use cash for any "entertainment" spending for the next couple of months to avoid over-spending and get us into the habit of spending less. Eventually we will go back to using out debit cards, but only after we are acclimatized to less spending.

As far as the other little changes are concerned, things are going well. I was out of bed on time today, but a nap in the afternoon on Sunday really screwed up my sleeping schedule, I don't think I slept more than 10 minutes at a time all night, for a grand total of about an hour. I have been taking my pill but not my vitamin, but my hair isn't falling out anymore, so that is cool, also my (not very severe) acne is pretty much gone. I am reading The Five People You Meet in Heaven right now and the review will be posted on Thursday as per usual. I bought some new mousse and hairspray, so hairstyling is even more fun: I even curled my hair on Saturday. It was pretty rad. We have been eating supper at home and ALL of our dishes are done. I even swept the kitchen floor and had my husband take down the recycling.

I am officially back on the Little Changes Train! wOOt wOOt!

Anne of Green Gables

I love this book. I love the entire series. I have loved them since I was 10.

The End.

Just kidding. I really do love this series of books though. They are well written and the story is wonderful. Anne Shirley and the rest of the folks in Avonlea could be real people. The situations in the book are real life situations: nothing is outrageous or beyond what would actually happen to an actual person, unlike in some other novels.

I highly recommend these books to everyone and anyone. My especial favourites are Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island and Anne's House of Dreams, but I think my most favourite is Rilla of Ingleside. I really enjoy historical fiction and, according to Wikipedia, that book is one of the only novels to present the First World War from the perspective of a Canadian woman. It's wonderful. They are all wonderful. Stop reading this blog garbage and go read these books.

201.4

Well, it's less than last week right?

Yesterday was a terrible day for little changes: I slept in; I forgot to take my Pill and vitamin (I did take my Pill before bed, but the vitamin needs to be taken with a meal); I didn't read any books; I had a Big Mac for supper and we didn't do any dishes, speed or otherwise. I also didn't go to bed until 2:30 last night. :S

Why was I so bad yesterday? Probably because my lower eyelid puffed up like a blowfish in the afternoon, so I came home and was feeling quite sorry for myself. When my husband got home from work we just went to bed and slept for 4 hours. Which was lovely, except we missed suppertime and dishes time and basically the entire evening. And then we stayed up until 2:30 to make up for all the extra sleeping we had already done.

You'd think with a night like that that I would jump out of bed at 8 this morning. Not quite. It was cold in the apartment and warm in the bed, so I stayed in bed until 8:30. I was definitely awake at 8 though.

Shame shame shame.

Choose-day

I hate when people say it like that. I took linguistics in university and the prof would say it like that and then say that was the "upper class" way of saying it. I say it's the "douche" way of saying it. T sounds like "tuh", not like "chuh"!

Anyway, my husband and I did half and hour of "speed dishes" and we made quite a dent in the kitchen cleaning process. There is still a lot to do, but progress is progress. I think half an hour tonight and half an hour tomorrow and we should be done completely. I find it much less daunting to give myself half an hour to work on something and then stop, as opposed to just working until something is finished. It is a lot more motivating when you know that in 30 minutes you will no longer have to be doing dishes.

At about quarter to bedtime, he decided that he wanted to lose at NHL10 for an hour (to kids in Mexico that have never even heard of hockey, he is sooo terrible at that game, it's very uncharacteristic) and I wanted to go to bed with him, so I was sitting up looking at bengal kittens. Needless to say I slept until 8:30 this morning and I am still quite tired. I guess I am going to have to start going to bed by myself. *sad face*

Little Change 6

This little change goes along with little change 5.

I will wash dishes after supper every night.

Well, really I mean that I will participate in dish washing after supper. I prefer drying and putting away over washing. Washing is gross. And I cook the supper, my husband has to do something!

We are both quite lazy when it comes to dishes and they tend to pile up. This frustrates and angers me. It is also an obstacle to having people over. I am not a very tidy person, but I do not like having people know that I am not very tidy. I feel like my house should always be (reasonably) clean before people come over. This means no dirty dishes, vacuum swept, clean bathroom, etc. Right now, this means either we spend an entire day cleaning before we have people over, or we don't have people over. Except really close friends that also have messy houses. Even then, it has to be guy friends. Guys with messy houses don't notice the mess in other houses either, girls are judgmental bitches. Well, I am a judgmental bitch about other people's houses, so I assume that they would do the same for me.

In other little change news, I did not do well on the bedtime thing last night, but I will get back on the wagon for true tonight. I was up late last night doing laundry and watching Harry Potter 5. Stupid CBC. I am back on the Pill again this week and I have been taking my vitamins for the past couple of days. I am starting a new book tonight (Anne of Green Gables review coming Thursday). I did my hair today. We had supper out because it is Monday and basketball was at 6:30 and 15 minutes is not enough time to make and eat supper between work and basketball. Tomorrow will be chicken stir-fry. We are going to do dishes tonight because there is a whole mess of dirty dishes in my kitchen, and we might as well get started. I have a feeling it will take us until Wednesday or Thursday to get everything done. I am not concerned about finishing tonight, or even tomorrow, I just want to get in the habit of doing dishes every night.

That's what this whole shebang is about, HABITS.

And conquering laziness.

Hardly Working

Well, I'm doing better at the little changes than I was on Tuesday. So that is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, I am still not doing well.

This in bed by 12, up by 8 is really a challenge for me this week and I don't understand why. I willfully slept in until after 8:30 yesterday, and until 8:20 today. I went to bed after 12:30 last night, so this morning understandable; but I was in bed before 12 on Wednesday, so yesterday's sleep-in was unmerited.

I need to stop making excuses and just DO it.

JUST DO THESE THINGS!!! THEY ARE NOT CHALLENGING!!!!

Sorry about that. I am getting a little angry. With myself. Not you, you're cool.

I have made supper every night since Tuesday though. Hamburger Helper Tuesday night was ok, pork chops and rice Wednesday night was better, and penne primevera last night was pretty good. Tonight is steak and potatoes and roasted vegetables. I am really looking forward to it.

Jane Eyre

I liked this book. It was very exciting and dramatic; I would say without a doubt that more "happened" in this book than in Pride and Prejudice. I don't know that I liked it better, but definitely I liked it differently. I would like to read it again because I am sure that there are events and clues and foreshadowing that I missed. At least I hope there was because otherwise my opinion of the book might change.

I enjoyed the story in this book, and I liked Jane Eyre as a character. I don't know that I liked her as a "person"; if she was alive today I don't think we would be friends, but I think that is as much an indicator of my persona and values as it is hers. The story was very engaging and it was a book that once I got started reading, I didn't want to put it down.

I just have one minor complaint about the book; namely, it is from the same publishers as the edition of Pride and Prejudice, so the place names were blanked out; but, I also had a more significant problem with it. The edition that I had informs the reader that this novel was originally published as an autobiography of a girl named Jane Eyre. The editors are quite right to do so, as this is interesting information about publishing standards at the time it was written. Women had a difficult time publishing novels and were not accepted as authors, so this book was presented as a memoir of a girl, edited by a man named Currer Bell. However, I have a major problem with the fact that people actually BELIEVED that this was a true story. It is an excellent plot for a novel, but I would never believe that this actually happened to someone. Everything that happens is just a little too convenient, a little too kismet. I know the world was a smaller place back then, but so-and-so from the West Indies knows so-and-so from Spain who knows so-and-so from this place in England who is related to so-and-so from the West Indies and around and around and Jane just happens to show up at exactly the right places to meet the right people. Her actions in these situations are very believable, but the situations themselves are beyond the stretch of what would be reasonable in the real world. This took me out of the story quite a bit. Had I just thought that it was a novel I would think, "How interesting/convenient!" and read on, but knowing that people believed this to be true just made me roll my eyes at the plot contrivances. Also, many of them were completely unnecessary; it wouldn't have been a huge detriment to the story to have some of the relationships between the characters dropped, or to add some more characters. To avoid completely spoiling the story (but spoiling it a little bit anyway), I'll just say that not EVERYONE in a book needs to be related.

Now, I've complained quite a bit about this book, but I don't want to leave the impression that it is a terrible book. I really did enjoy reading it and I think that it is a great piece of literature and a wonderful love story. I would recommend it to others and I will definitely be reading it again.

202.0

That is what I weigh this morning. I've decided to make Wednesday into "Weigh-in Wednesday". Wednesday already sucks, so we might as well make it suck harder instead of ruining other days. Also, when weigh-ins start being a good thing, i.e., when I start losing weight, then it will really brighten my Wednesday.

So, as you can see, I am officially up from the initial weight in August. Which stinks. However, I haven't really done a lot of weight loss related little changes yet, so I am not particularly worried. I suppose I should be worried that I am gaining weight, but I have already started to change things, so I am not. The tide will turn next week. I am confident.

I am back on the little change wagon. I made supper last night (hamburger helper, yum!), and I went to sleep at 12 last night and I was out of bed at 7:30; so, that is progress. I still forgot to take my vitamin, but I don't really know where they are anymore, so I will have to go hunting for them.

In other news, they played "Do You Know the Enemy?" and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" on the radio this morning. This is either a sign from the gods to post on my blog, or the radio station we listen to needs to get some new songs.

FAIL

That is what I am doing right now. Quite honestly this week is not going well as far as little changes are concerned. I was up until after 1 last night, I didn't get out of bed until almost 8:30, it's my week off the Pill and I haven't been taking my multivitamin, I am reading children's books that are not exactly on the list, AND we had Subway for supper last night.

I am an epic failure at not being lazy. The only thing I have done so far this week is shower and do my hair.

I really need to pull my socks up and get at it. I need to put down the books and SLEEP at midnight. I need to JUMP out of bed at 8. I need to make supper at home and take my vitamins. (Tonight will be speghetti and meatsauce and salad.) Luckily, I am almost finished my Anne of Green Gables books, and then I can move on to something a little more mature.

I can do these little things. I am capable.

(repeat mantra)

I can do these little things. I am capable.

By the way, Thursday is book review day. I have reviews for Jane Eyre and Anne of Green Gables in the works.

Little Change 5

Well, here we are. Week 5 already. And I have made very little progress on the weight loss and money saving fronts. In fact, I probably weigh more and have less money than at the start. This little change is meant to counter-act both of those facts with one fell swoop.

I will plan, prepare and eat supper at home every evening.

(Unless it is a special occasion.)

I decided to put that qualifier there because I know that there will be occasions like my birthday and anniversary that I will want to go out for a meal. And there is no reason that I shouldn't. I can afford to dine out, and I believe in all things in moderation. Plus, the point of these changes is to make my life better and healthier, and I don't think that it is "better" or "healthier" to deny yourself all the things you enjoy all of the time.

As I said, this change is important in reaching both my weight loss and money saving goals.

When you plan your meals and prepare and eat them at home you have greater control over what you eat and how much of it you eat. Restaurants tend to give you far too much food because it is cheap for them, but allows them to charge more without you feeling cheated. Also, restaurant meals can have enormous amounts of salt and fat that you probably wouldn't eat at home. Example, at restaurants I eat a lot of French fries; at home, I don't make French fries; but I don't miss them.

Further, I can feed my husband and myself on about $100 worth of groceries every week, but if we were to eat out every night (as we have been doing lately) it would cost FAR more than that. I predict the savings will be substantial.

Most of the laziness to be conquered is in the planning stage. I enjoy cooking and clearly enjoy eating. The major difficulty here will be planning the meals and grocery shopping once a week to buy all my necessary ingredients. A secondary difficulty will be that my husband is in charge of dishes and he has made no such pact to stop being lazy. I hate cooking in a dirty kitchen and he does frustrate me by washing only the EXACT dishes that we need to prepare and consume a meal.

However, that is a little change for another week. Let this week being with its evening meals full of promise. Tonight is a rush night, so we are having turkey sandwiches. Yum!

Pride & Prejudice

I really liked this book. Generally, I like most books, so I have a feeling a lot of my book reviews will start like this, but let's stick to the book at hand and why specifically I liked it.

I think the major reason I liked the book so much was that I really liked the movie version that came out a couple of years ago with Kiera Knightly in it. That version was fairly true to the events of the book, so I already had a grasp of the characters and the settings, which is sometimes important in a book from this era. It is not written in "modern" or "plain" English, so it takes me a little bit of reading to get back into the flow of understanding what they are all talking about and what is going on. The story is a little bit moony and over-dramatic, they fall so deeply in love but they don't even really know each other that well and it all seems a little strange, but I guess that is how they did it back in those days? Well, it is more likely in those days that very few people fell in love and decided to get married, most people married for money or "connections". I think the idea of meeting a rich guy and falling in mutual love is just a very romantic notion to novelists (especially female novelists); this is true even in novels today.

There were some things I didn't really like about the book, but these are largely picky little things that are very true to the story and the era, but an annoyance to my modern sensibilities. We never get to know the first name of any of the men, even when they are to be married to one of the Bennet girls. Even Mrs. Bennet calls her husband Mr. Bennet (and vice versa) which seems unrealistic. They've been married for 25 years, and she can't call him by his first name? Also, and I think this might just be the edition of the book that I had, but a lot of place names and dates and things are blanked out. For example, it might say, "We went to the ---shire". This is terribly annoying. I know it is probably because the place names or dates were inaccurate, but I don't care. It takes you out of the story much more to see the ---shire than it would to see a made up place name, or even a name of a place that is wrong. How am I going to know? I (and most people I would imagine) am not familiar with the geography of all the small towns and villages in Britain. Finally, a lot of the plot revolves around Elizabeth knowing something about someone and keeping it secret, and then something terrible (and predictable) happens because nobody else knew. I know that proper manners and decorum counted for a lot back then, but, really, you would let your sister go off with a man you knew was a liar and a cheat without even a small warning to her or your parents? Knowing that this would ruin everyone's chances at "landing a husband"?

Anyway, I really did like this book, and I think it is definitely worth reading, but maybe see the movie first so you have a better idea what is going on. Or be smarter than me with a better vocabulary (not hard) and maybe you won't need to see the movie beforehand.

Little Change 4

Ok, ok, ok. I know I promised that I would post little change 4 last night, but I was still hella sick and fell asleep as soon as I got home from work. Today was finally the sick day I desperately needed. There was scrubbing and neocitron and sleeping and wonderfulness.

Anyway, little change 4. This little change is super duper weak sauce and you are going to think that I am super gross for even needed to make this change. Here goes:

I will shower and do my hair every morning.

This is very important now that I have the new "Peppermint Patty" 'do. Before when I had long hair I didn't really need to wash it every day. Nor did I have to blow dry it. Generally, I just threw my hair up in a ponytail and went on my merry way to work. This does not work when you have short hair and bangs. Short hair needs more regular washing, bangs require styling. All-in-all the haircut is working out pretty well, and so is little change 4.

I promise, next week will be something good.

I swear.

Ugh, or Welcome Sweet Death

With apologies again, I thought once I was at my mom's place and would have regular computer access there would be more posting, but, clearly, this was not the case. Also, the fact that I have felt like death warmed over for the last week probably hasn't helped. Today is back to work day and luckily I only feel like shit, which is a definite step up from death warmed over. Or at least I think so. I would most certainly call in sick today and scrub everything in my house (to kill the germs), OD on Nyquil and then sleep for six years if I could, but unfortunately I have an ass-ton of work to do today.

I will post Little Change 4 tonight when I have a little more time, also there are book reviews for Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre coming. I went book "shopping" at my mom's house on the weekend and brought back 40 pounds of books from "the list", but I did leave some behind, notably Charlotte's Web and The Wind in the Willows because I didn't think I wanted to read those right away anyway. The max your suitcase can weigh is 50lbs, so with 4lbs of clothes our suitcase was pretty freakin' full, and heavy. The other little changes are going well I suppose. I was up before 8 today, but because I napped for 4 hours yesterday afternoon I didn't go to bed until 2ish. Indeed, at 1 in the morning I decided that I NEEDED to unpack my suitcases and put all the books on the book shelf. I am still on the Pill, but I have been neglecting my multivitamin because it needs to be taken with a meal and I haven't had any meals at home in the last week; now that we are back, that should change.

Well, off to work! If I don't die in a coughing spell on the way there, I will consider today a success.

With Apologies

It seems it has been a very long time since I posted. I have been in Van City on holidays since Thursday, and haven't had much computer time. The little changes are going well, I have been taking my vitamins and my Pills every day, and I will finish Pride and Prejudice tomorrow on the plane (the book progress has slowed because I am too busy visiting). My sleep/awake schedule has gone to shit, but I think that is to be expected when you are on holidays in a different time zone.

My husband is not with me here, I am visiting a single girlfriend, so that is both awesome and sucky. It is super fun to have some girl time (we went for pedicures on Friday, and bought new purses, shoes and jewelry on Saturday) but I didn't think that I would miss him so much. We have been apart before, and for longer, but I think this time is different because he has become my best friend and I am not used to hanging out with girls all the time. Apparently farting and burping is gross for girls. Who knew? This provides an even stronger case for making lady friends at home. I will have more fun with my existing friends because I will remember how to do the girlfriend thing.

My best friend here has a new friend that she hangs out with all the time. She has an amazing model-type body (tall, thin, legs for days, nice boobs), but she's kind of a but-her-face, so that makes her more tolerable. My bestie and I are very similar in shape and size, so that works out great for us, no jealousy. The 3 of us went out last night. Somehow these girls talk about getting slammed every weekend and drinking all the time, but they were kinda light-weights last night; we all drank the same and I was totally fine and they were falling all over themselves. I haven't been out with girls like that for a while and I guess drinking with only guys can increase your tolerance. Also, I felt disgusting. I don't know if I'm just being overly sensitive, but it felt like every guy was looking at me and thinking how fat I was. At one point these guys came over to take a picture of us and the one put his arm around me and in the picture he is leaning towards me making a face and has his hand over my boob. Then while we were walking home some guys in an SUV said something along the lines of, "What about those thick ones?" and then starting hooting at us. I was not happy about that, but I don't think the other girls heard or cared because they were too drunk.

Also, as you note, I only mention buying shoes and jewelry, this is because I am enormous and nothing fits me. This is the major problem with the little changes, the changes in my figure are pretty little too. This isn't like a regular, change everything at once diet where you lose 5-10 pounds pretty quick, I have a feeling that I won't actually start losing weight until October or November. I have to keep reminding myself that this is (as hokey and "Dr. Phil-esque" as it sounds) a lifestyle change. I could lose 5-10 pounds and the celebrate back on 20 as has been my standard approach to weight loss, or I can slowly but surely change my habits until I lose 50 pounds, in like a year and then have all these fantastic habits just be part of my regular life and be able to stay 50 pounds lighter.

Until I have a baby or 2 and gain a bunch of it back. Lame.

Assorted Birth Control Stories, Continued

So, I went to the walk-in clinic to get some cyclen for little change 2. I swipe my health card at the "self check-in" kiosk and it says that, since I have never been to the clinic, I need to register with the receptionist. She is nowhere to be found. So I wait. And wait. About 5 minutes later, she appears, clearly busy with something else, and doesn't even notice me standing there. It takes a full 10 minutes and an elderly lady who has forgotten her umbrella in the exam room before I am registered, which should be an indication to me of things to come, but I sit in the waiting room and wait to be called. The 3 people that arrive immediately after me get much better service, but I get an appointment first, so whatever.

Once I am in the examination room, the receptionist/medical office assistant/nurse/I don't know her job title comes in and asks a million questions about why I am there and what kind of birth control pills and my health status in general. Quite a few of these questions are very personal, like when was your last period, etc. and she doesn't close the examining room door, so presumably all the people in the waiting room can her and me discussing it. Great. We reach a sticking point on which type of birth control I want. I say "Cyclen" and she repeats back, "Tri-Cyclen" which leads me to explain that I really truly want Cyclen and not Tri-cyclen and the differences between them, and I assume she has things under control.

The doctor comes in a little later, asks me a few more questions about my general health and when my last PAP was. He mentions that I can come to this clinic for a PAP and I can make my appointment online. This sounds fantastic to me. I love booking things online! He takes my blood pressure (which hurts a lot more than I remember) and sends me on my merry way with a prescription for:

3 months of tri-cyclen.

Unfortunately, I don't read the prescription until I get to the pharmacy, and by this point the clinic is closed and I am kind of stuck with what I got. Boo-urns.

After I get home, disappointed with my tri-cyclen, I check out the web page so I can book my PAP online and I discover that there is a consent form, which reads:

I, ___________________________, hereby give consent to having my pap smear and associated swabs and services provided by the:

___Registered Nurse

___Midwifery Student

___International Medical Graduate (Unlicensed Physician)

___Nurse Practitioner Student

___Medical Resident

who is working for the responsible physician in a delegation capacity in order to develop relevant practice experience in the office/clinic environment.

I understand that the above person is working under the supervision of Dr. _________________________, who may or may not need to repeat any or all aspects of my services as necessary.

So not only would I be getting my PAP done by someone who has potentially never done it before, I will probably have to get it done twice because the doctor will likely have to "repeat any or all aspects of my services". No thank you, I'll just find a GP and get it done all at once.

In other news, I got my hair cut yesterday so that when it falls out it isn't as long. Now I bear a very strong resemblance to Peppermint Patty. I think I have this year's Halloween costume all figured out!

Assorted Birth Control Stories

As we all know, my little change for this week was to go back on the Pill (and take a multivitamin), so I thought I would give a little background information about my history with birth control pills as well as a little story about this most recent acquisition.

I started taking birth controls of one type or another when I was 15. This was not so I "could fuck" as a drunk girl in my graduating class so eloquently put it, but because I had terrible acne and such debilitating cramps that I would spend at least one day of my period feverish and throwing up. True story, to this day, I will not eat cottage cheese because that is what milk looks like when you throw it up. So, I took very low dose "birth control" to control my acne and cramps until I became sexually active. At that point I got my first PAP and switched to a pill that would actually prevent babies. My doctor recommended tri-cyclen because it is low dose and effective. Unfortunately, I experienced some spotting and asked to be switched to something else, so she recommended cyclen which is just 3 weeks of the highest dose of tri-cyclen. I was very happy with the cyclen, I started dating my husband and had another clean PAP.

This was about 4 and a half years ago. My doctor back in the day (whom I really liked) was also a mother to very young children and changed her schedule to only work for 3 hours 3 mornings a week and became IMPOSSIBLE to get an appointment with, so I started going to walk-in clinics to get my prescription renewed.

Then, 2 years ago, I moved to another province and had to start the process of finding a doctor all over again, and as it says at the top of the page, I am LAZY. So I continued to go to walk-in clinics to get my renewals and each doctor said that I needed a PAP and they would only give me 3 months worth of pills, which should give me enough time to book an appointment for a PAP where the doctor would give me a whole year's prescription. I got annoyed with this process and since I am too lazy to get a doctor and book an appointment to get a PAP I ran out of pills last fall and just decided to give my body a break.

*Please note that is truly is because I am too lazy to book an appointment and not because I am uncomfortable with the idea of a PAP. It is not a terrible procedure, I am not nervous about getting it done. EVERY sexually active female should get a PAP test done. I am an awful role model. I don't get manicures and pedicures either because I am too lazy to book appointments. Clearly, laziness is bad.

This fall, with the little changes upon me, I decided that I should go back on the pill, for the reasons mentioned in the previous post (hair-loss, doin' it, pulling out) and I headed back to the walk-in clinic.

To Be Continued...

Little Change 2 (and 3)

Well, it's Sunday and we all know what that means: it's time for a new little change!!!

*The crowd goes wild!!!!*

Anyway, since I am going on holidays for the better part of the next 2 weeks, the next 2 little changes will be a bit weak. I won't really be home to prepare meals or go to the gym or clean house or do any of that other stuff that needs to be "little changed" so these changes a pretty tame, but still important, or at least I think so. Therefore, without further ado, little change 2:

I will go back on the Pill and take a multivitamin every day.

These things may not seem very important to an outside observer, but they are both a part of the process involved in getting my hair to stop falling out and grow back in. For those who have not been webmd-ing female hair-loss, it can be caused by changes in hormones caused by going off of birth control pills and also by deficiency in certain vitamins (more specifically, vitamin B12 and vitamin E). As well, my husband would really appreciate being able to have sex more often than we do now. And I would like a more secure method of birth control than "pulling out". Even though pulling out is only slightly less effective at preventing pregnancy than condoms. Source

There are some more stories about the Pill, but I will get into that later in the week. On to little change 3! I am going to give you the set up for little change 3 this week because I will be away next Sunday and also because I am excited about it and want to get started today! I have gotten into a little bit of a rut wherein I spend my evenings (and afternoons, let's face it) watching TV. Not that there is anything wrong with that, in fact I LOVE watching TV, but I would like to expand my interests a little bit. Also, I love to read and since I only own the Harry Potter series, I have read those 7 books over and over and over. I still love them, but I want to start seeing other books. I have seen around the internet a list of the Top 100 books that people can't live without created by Guardian and I decided that I should make little change 3:

I will read 1 book from the Guardian "100 Books You Can't Live Without" every week.

I have read some of these books before, but I am going to re-read them for the sake of completeness (and because I liked them). I plan to write a short review of each book as I finish it on the website, just to keep myself motivated and so that I can remember the books after I have finished reading them. I am not a literary scholar, so these will not be indepth reviews discussing themes and character profiles, just my opinion of the story and characters in the book. I was at Coles today and they had classic novels 3 for $10, so I bought 3 books from the list (and got an additional 10% off with my irewards card, so each book was really only $3) and I am going to get started reading them this week while I am on planes and things. Also, I think I have several of these books at my Mom's house, so I will try and pick up as many as I can while I am home. I do not plan to buy everyone of these books, but hopefully will get most of them from the library or friends. The book I am going to start with is (oddly enough) number 1 on the list and one I picked up at the bookstore today: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

Wish me luck on my new changes!

The World is a Vampire

I have no idea where the title of that post came from (well, I mean, other than Billy Corgan's mouth). My brain just spit out those words when I asked it for a blog title and I went with it.

Yesterday was a super sucko jerk-hole day and I am infinitely glad that it is over and will never happen again. And then today I had a horrible dream that I didn't go to work until 11 and I was dressed all slutty and it was just all-around awful. I was awakened at 7:58 (boo-yah little change!) by my husband freaking out that he was going to be late for work (he starts work at 8). Upon waking I said, "Oh thank God!" because that dream was just so REAL. Looking back on it now I should have known it was a dream, there were all these weird things like the clothes I was wearing, the fact that our friend that works nights showed up sometime during the night and was sleeping on our balcony, and the frog in our apartment...and a bunch of other things that obviously weren't true to life.

I am so pleased that it is finally Friday. Whenever I say it is finally Friday I have to say "Finally Friday, Freedom Friday!" in my head because a radio dj when I was in university used to say that and it just stuck so securely in my craw. I don't have BIG plans for the weekend, just a lot of cleaning and junk to get ready for my holidays in a week. Hooray for holidays! I'm off to visit a friend and then to my hometown for another friend's wedding, with a lot of visiting stops along the way. I really can't wait. It's going to be totally Reaganomics.

Anyway, the sooner I go to work, the sooner it will be the weekend, so I am outs!

Radio Brain and Breakfast Blues

Ugh. I have radio brain again this morning, but definitely more severe. "All you did was save my life" by Our Lady Peace. Whiniest song ever. But nothing that a LOT of Four Year Strong can't fix, am I right?

It was a popcorn and candy supper last night, which means that there is still lots of popcorn and candy on my coffee table. As such, I am in the process of convincing myself that popcorn and candy do not make an effective breakfast, only a delicious one. And I have run out of corn pops and froot loops (the candy that you CAN eat for breakfast) so that leaves the at-home breakfast choices pretty slim. I suppose I could go to work even earlier and get a blueberry scone from the cafeteria. So delicious, but the best ones would probably already be gone, and then I would have to get a cinnamon one and those are not as good as one would think.

God my life is hard. :P

We all knew this would happen...

but I don't think anybody thought it would happen so soon.

Backsliding into old habits. Terrible. I didn't get up until 8:07 today! The really dangerous thing though was that I fell back asleep with the alarm clock radio on. This is not good because I could end up accidentally sleeping past 10 if I fall back asleep. Clearly, this says that the morning show is dullsville. They don't even play good music in the morning. The main reason I got out of bed was that they were playing "Do you know the enemy?" by Green Day and I have decided that song is the enemy of sleep. And as the first 2 lines of the chorus are on loop in my brain, it is also the enemy of my sanity.

I need to renew my commitment to the little changes; out of bed before 8 needs to be out of bed before 8, even if I don't want to be.

In other news, it's Wednesday. This means there are still 3 work days this week. Fun.

Staying the Course

Good Morning!

You may have noticed that I am posting this after 8 AM, but never fear, I am still sticking with my little change. I have already had a shower and eaten breakfast and it is now 8:35, so really, little change 1 is a major success so far. I am not exhausted during the day, I sleep much better, I'm early for work! It's really pretty cool what this one little change has done.

Also, my sunburn on my arms, shoulders and face is going to turn into a lovely tan, I am sure of it. My thighs also seem to be tan in most places, the severe burn at the top is still a bit painful though. Nerds to wearing underpants!

But really, overall, the word of the day is optimism!

Little Change 1: So Far So Good

Well, so far, this "little changes" thing seems to be going pretty well for me. As you can see, I am clearly out of bed before 8 AM and I did so for the entire weekend as well! Granted, we were at the lake, sleeping in a tent with 10-20 other people up and around, so getting up before 8 was not really a challenge.

I do regret not setting my first little change to "Put on sunscreen every morning" because I waited until noon on Saturday, and, let me tell you, that was a mistake. My arms, shoulders, back and face are pretty burned, but definitely not the worst that they have ever been. The worst is my thighs. Oh, my thighs! My giant, giant thighs!!! I have never burned my thighs so high up on my body, probably because I always wore the little boy-shorts or regular shorts over my swimsuit (stupid young me, wasting my hot young body), and it HURTS. That skin is sensitive yo!

Oh well, hindsight = 20/20, so now I know. Now, to keep up the good work on my first little change (and all subsequent little changes) so that next year at the lake I am in a little bikini and burn my beautiful little flat tummy too!

The Concept:

As my late twenties creep up on me, I find that my life is not going as well as it could. I have wasted my early twenties being a fat, lazy slob with no money and I don't really want to spend the rest of my life like this. Also, my hair is falling out. Which is a shame because I had really lovely hair.

This is especially frustrating because I know better.

I know that sitting on the sofa eating sunflower seeds and drinking Dr. Pepper is not the way to lose weight.
I know that buying chips for supper at 7-11 is not very cost or waist effective.
I know that I should walk more and use the gym membership that I am paying out the ass for.
I know that I should go to bed at a reasonable hour instead of staying up until 4 AM reading wikipedia articles about Sailor Moon and then lamenting that they do not sell the English dubbed cartoon that I loved as a child for a decent price on Amazon.
I know that I should wake up early, shower, eat breakfast and go to work instead of spending my morning starting blogs.
I know that I should pack a lunch instead of eating chocolate bars at 3 PM.
I know that I should be putting 20% of my income in an RRSP so that I can buy a house in a year or two.
I know that I should do laundry every week and dishes every night so that there isn't a mad scramble to clean things when I want to have people over.
I know I should make more of an effort to cultivate friendships at work and stop being such an awkward bitch.

I know all of these things (and more) about how to have a small waist, a clean house and retire at 50, but I am just too lazy to stick with them. My bad habits are too entrenched.

As such, I have decided that I am going to make 1 or 2 little positive changes every week in the hopes that they will stick better than my plans to make a million changes at once have. I am going to try to develop good habits bit by bit to replace my old crappy habits.

My long term goals:
to weigh 150 lbs
to wear a size 8
to regulate my schedule
to live in a tidy house within 2 years
to have stable finances

Now then, my starting point:
Weight: 198 (ouch!)
Size: 14+ (probably closer to 16)
Schedule: what schedule?
House: 1 bedroom apartment, dirty dishes, dirty laundry, general chaos
Finances: No debt (recent!), but no savings either

Generally, little change day will be Sunday, but I am going to give myself a couple extra days with the first one. So, the first of weekly little changes:

I will go to bed before 12 and get out of bed before 8 every day.

(Hey, I said they were little)
